What is Jing?
Jing is the “superior ultimate” treasure in Chinese tonic herbalism. It translates as “Essence” and at the deepest sense, is it who and what we are. Jing is the deep foundational energy reserves of the body. It is this energy that determines one's ultimate vitality and the quantity and quality of one’s life span.
Jing is our core ancestral life-force. Formed during conception, it is the highly concentrated energy inherited from generations past and the combined powers of our parents life force. It is closely associated with our genetic potential and thus is intimately associated with the aging process.
Jing governs the strength of our structural frame, hair, nails, our healing powers, our sexual functions and reproductive potential, our youthfulness and ability to handle stress, adversity, overwork, illness and the many other challenges that we face in our lives.
The great reservoir of Jing energy is rooted in the Kidneys and is connected with longevity, vitality and sexual energy. The Kidneys are our battery pack. To lead a long and healthy balanced life, one must accumulate an abundance of Jing to recharge the Kidneys and to avoid its reckless dissipation. Jing can become depleted and burned up in the body by life itself. It is most especially depleted by chronic and acute stress and excessive behaviour, including overwork, excessive emotionalism, substance abuse, chronic pain or illness and excessive sexual activity.
Jing is a precious and treasured substance that needs to be nourished, protected and preserved. An abundance of Jing energy gives us the strength and courage to be creative and manifest our thoughts and desires, live our dreams and attract the things that we want in our lives. The powerful and regenerative qualities of the tonic herbs in Primal provide tools of support and aid in the preservation of Jing. Jing energy accumulates over time and with regular use of Primal one can expect to feel a marked difference in your body, mind, and spirit.
What's in Primal Essence?

The 'Yin Jing' Tonic Herbs
Yin is defined as the cyclic rhythm of nature in which energy is being accumulated, assimilated and stored for later use. Those herbs that replenish spent energy are referred to as the Yin Jing herbs. These highly nutritious herbs help us recuperate and nurture the fundamental reserves of the body, mind, and spirit. The Yin Jing herbs have a nourishing, moistening, cooling and anti-inflammatory nature. They accumulate and store Jing in the Kidneys. They build up vitality, revitalise youth, enhance fertility and help to increase the sexual fluids. Yin Jing herbs work to strengthen the lower back, the legs, the ankles and the knees and all the joints in the body. They promote healthy nails, return hair to its natural colour, fortify mind clarity and acuity, brighten the eyes, support healthy hormone balance, and counteract stress.
He Shou Wu (Ho Shou Wu)
He Shou Wu is one of the most popular and highly revered tonic herbs in Asian herbalism. It’s youthfulness, anti-aging and longevity agents are simply unsurpassed by any other herb. It is one of the most powerful Yin restorative herbs that replenishes and stores vitality and provides deep, primordial Jing energy to the cells of the body.
He Shou Wu is highly therapeutic as a battery charger for the kidneys. It is widely used as a tonic to prevent premature aging by tonifying the Kidney and Liver functions. Its remarkable strength comes from its ability to efficiently clean the kidney and liver, which in turn cleans the blood and cleanses the whole body. It is also a great blood builder which helps feed the skin. It’s a primary fertility enhancing herb, both men and women take it when attempting to have children.
He Shou Wu contains high amounts of iron and zinc. Zinc plays an important role in our growth & development, immune & neurological functions, the enzymatic functions in the body, and is crucial for the sexual functions and reproductive health.
Prolonged use of this herb is said to turn one’s gray hair back to its original colour. This is He Shou Wu’s most famous attribute and is widely used in China for this reason. It is known to help the hair grow fuller and more illustrious.
When consumed regularly it can enhance sexual drive, increase sperm count, strengthen the lower back, the knees and the ankles, and stimulate the thymus gland, the endocrine gland responsible for producing SOD (superoxide dismutase). SOD is an important antioxidant defence in nearly all living cells exposed to oxygen. It is an enzyme that protects our cells from DNA damage, lipid peroxidation, ionising radiation damage and other forms of progressive cell degradation.
The ancient legend of the herb tells of an old, frail and fast aging man named Mr Ho. Lonely old Mr Ho’s greatest desire is to start a family and have children with a beautiful woman but his lack of passion and sex drive keeps him from accomplishing his wish. He has been searching all over for substances that will help to restore his vitality and youth. One day Mr Ho falls asleep by the roadside and when he awakes he notices a plant shining brightly and emanating light all around it. He believes this plant could be of some use to him so he picks it out of the ground and takes it with him. He takes the plant to his local shaman herbalist to work with and after some experimentation with different preparations, the herbalist discovers that by simmering it in a special blend of wine and black bean sauce, the herb was transformed into a powerful tonic for rejuvenation. Mr Ho begins to consume the herb and quickly notices his youth and vitality returning. He is able to sleep better, have more sustained energy, his libido, and sexual vigor increased, his lower back pain was relieved, and his hair grew back and returned to its original black colour. The legend claims the Mr Ho ended up propagating seventy children and lived to be a hundred and thirty years old. The Chinese translation of He Shou Wu literally means "Old black haired Ho” or “Mr Ho’s black hair”. Thusly, the herb He Shou Wu was named after its discoverer Mr Ho.
Prepared Rehmannia (Shu Di Huang)
Rehmannia is referred to as the “Kidney’s own food.” This Yin Jing herb is often considered a primary herb for longevity, anti aging, rejuvenation and overall, life-lengthening.
There are two forms of Rehmannia used in Chinese herbalism: raw Rehmannia and prepared Rehmannia. Raw Rehmannia has just been dried and is not considered a tonic in Chinese herbalism. Prepared Rehmannia is highly tonic. It is prepared and cooked using a secret proprietary recipe by soaking in a special blend of wine, then steamed and dried under the sun. It is a sticky jet-black coloured herb that tastes sweet. In Chinese medicine, foods that are black nourish the Kidneys because they contain levels of Zinc that correlate with our Kidney functions, reproductive functions, and the overall Jing functions in our body.
Rehmannia is a fundamental Kidney tonic and profound blood builder, making it important for women’s health who need to rebuild blood regularly. It is said to tone up the sexual functions in both men and women, strengthen reproductive functions, enhance fertility, restore youth, relieve lower back pain, improve cracked nails and can return natural pigment to the hair and improve sleep.
Goji Berry (Gou Qi Zi)

Lycium cleanses the liver as the carotenoids are transformed into Vitamin A in the liver, which is said to be beneficial for skin health, brighten the eyes and improve vision.
Lycium has long been famed as a longevity and anti-aging herb, producing in studies a 48% increase of SOD (superoxide dismutase), our body’s most important anti-aging enzyme. It is high in Polysaccharides which provides increased immune support and they are powerful cellular anti-oxidants, effectively slowing down aging.
Goji is also high in Vitamin C, is a rich source of the B-vitamins - B1 and B2, it contains eighteen kinds of amino acids and numerous trace minerals - Zinc, iron, and copper. It also contains significant amounts of calcium, germanium, selenium, and phosphorus, and many flavonoids which protect cell membranes due to their antioxidant activity
Because it is a Yin Jing herb it also strengthens the legs, the lower back and the sexual functions. It is widely believed to increase sexual fluids and enhance fertility. Li Ching Yuen, the oldest living man on record, who lived to be 252 years old, made Goji famous by attributing the strength of his legs to this herb. He attributed He Shou Wu to his first hundred years of longevity and Lycium to his last hundred years!
Regular consumption of this herb is believed to lead a long and happy life and it is said that with consistent consumption of Lycium it will promote cheerfulness, keep you vital, and brighten the spirit. It is said in China that a handful of Goji berries a day will keep you smiling for the entire day and with regular daily practice, it will keep you smiling for the length of your life.
Goji is a great introductory herb to tonic herbalism because being one of the most popular and more delicious herbs, it is one of the easiest herbs to get into and consume as a tea or even as a snack. Lycium actually refers to "school of learning” and for that reason Goji is regarded as being an educational herb. It is a herb that you can get started with and it will help you to develop a better understanding of the superior class of tonic herbs.
The 'Yang Jing' Tonic Herbs
Yang is defined as the cyclic rhythm of nature in which energy is being expended in order to create a manifest action.Yang is associated with action, expansion, and movement. These more energising herbs provide immediate deep energy and work to supplement and protect the YinJing. The Yang Jing herbs have an activating, drying, warm or hot nature. These herbs quickly build strength, enhance endurance, sexual vitality, structural support & bone density and one’s ability to complete feats of great exertion. The Yang stimulates our fire functions of the Kidney which improves digestion and elimination. The Kidney Yang is what keeps the body warm and it generates action and movement in the body. This Yang energy gives us the drive and power to feel motivated, inspired, to be creative and to manifest our thoughts and desires and attract the things that we want in our lives.
Morinda Root (Ba Ji Tian)
Morinda is called the “strength builder”. It is the root of the Noni plant, but tastes pleasant and sweet. It is comically referred to sometimes in the U.S. as “Cistanche in your pants.” It has been said that those that take Cistanche for more than a few weeks notice their sexual prowess increase noticeably.
Since it nourishes the Yang of the Kidney it tends to strengthen the sexual functions and increase our personal drive, willpower, creativity, and the clarity and power of our thought. These are all functions that are governed by the Yang of the Kidneys.
Youthfulness is associated with sexual vigor and vitality, and that sexual energy is also creative energy. We can choose to use our sexual vigor in a sexual manner or we can choose to channel that energy into other creative outlets. We can use it to manifest our desires, live our dreams and attract the things that we want in our lives. This energy gives us the power to feel motivated, to take charge, to tackle our list of goals and inspire action. When our Yin and Yang energy is strong we can flourish as a person and embody our true self. We can be full of energy, creative, high in spirit and strong minded. We believe in ourselves and feel confident in the world.
Cordyceps Mushroom (Dong Chong Xia Cao)
According to the written record, Cordyceps has been used for over a thousands years in China and Tibet. It is one of the superstars in Chinese tonic herbalism. It has a powerful balance of both Yin and Yang energy and is therefore well tolerated by everyone and is safe to use over a long period of time.
Cordyceps is used to strengthen the body and mind at a fundamental level. It is a great rejuvenating tonic that restores the deep energy that we expend through excessive exertion of life's activities, stressful circumstances and ageing. It also nourishes the Chi, our vitality, which keeps us strong and gives us the energy to be creative and active.
It is a potent Kidney Jing tonic that is known to strengthen and increase the sexual functions, brain power, and the structural integrity and healing abilities of the body. It is a powerful Yang tonic, and as a sexual tonic, it is one of the best. It is commonly used for impotence, sexual malaise, frigidity and infertility. Consistent use helps to strengthen the skeletal structure, the lower back, the knees, and the ankles.</p>
Cordyceps is also a major Lung tonic. Studies have shown that it increases oxygen utilisation by 30-40%, and cellular energy, ATP by 20-30%. It is revered by athletes as it greatly improves performance, strengthens respiratory power, muscle building capabilities, increases endurance, stamina and allows recovery from strenuous training much faster than normal. The first major exposure the Western world had in regards to Cordyceps was back in 1993 when the Chinese women’s olympic track and field team broke multiple world records. It was later found out that they were using a secret formula during their vigorous training program and Cordyceps was the main ingredient.
Cordyceps is high in polysaccharides and beta-glucans that help our body resist a wide range pathogenic bacteria, fungi and viruses. It is often used in Asia to treat fungus and yeast infections. It has also been shown to help regulate blood pressure and strengthen heart muscle.
In ancient times, Cordyceps were so highly prized and valued by the emperor that they were illegal to possess if you did not belong to the ruling class. If you were caught with Cordyceps without handing them over it was considered a heavy crime, punishable by death. The emperor understood how valuable this herb was to be as an overall life enhancing and anti-aging agent.
The mushroom is produced by one of the most fascinating and strangest organism mutations in nature. In the wild, Cordyceps is a parasitic fungus that travels through the air. At certain times of the year the mushroom dispenses its spores into the air and it lands onto the heads of caterpillars. When this is done, the mushroom infiltrates the body and mind of the caterpillar and begins to take the caterpillar over. The infected brain directs the disoriented caterpillar upward onto a tree or branch or somewhere along the valley floor, and there the fruiting body begins to grow out of the caterpillars head. Eventually the rest of the body will be completely consumed by the mushroom while still retaining the shape of the caterpillar. The transformation is complete and it is now 100 percent vegetarian fungal material. At the right time, spores will again dispense from the new mushroom and the cycle will continue.
Wild Cordyceps is a rare and expensive herb. It only grows at high elevations in the Himalayas around Tibet and Nepal and in small border sections of India and China. The high altitude therefore makes its collection difficult, and the high price tag and rarity of Cordyceps has limited its use by the general public.
The cultivation of Cordyceps began in 1972 in China. The mushroom biomass is grown in large tanks using modern “fermentation" technology and the great benefit is that it can produce large quantities very quickly and at a far less expense than to collect the wild material off the cliffs of a Chinese or Tibetan peak. Over the years the technology has become so highly advanced that it is now possible to produce a variety of Cordyceps (named "CS-4”) that is completely identical to the wild fungi. The extract that we source is the only cultivated Cordyceps available today that is genetically and analytically Bio-Identical to the wild Cordyceps occurring in Nature. It is 100% organic and vegetarian. There are no animal nutrients used during the fermentation process. Cultivated Cordyceps is still a premium tonic herb. In fact, a lot of studies are now showing that the cultivated variety shares all the same benefits as the wild Cordyceps and that it is just as potent and efficacious. Some even say the cultivated variety is better! It’s sweet and pungent taste is sometimes referred to as having a malty or chocolate like flavour! It really is a valuable and treasured substance.
Eucommia Bark (Du Zhong)
Eucommia has the distinction of being the first herb listed in the first known pharmacopeia in the world written by Shen Nong, the Divine Farmer, in 2975 B.C. He classified the herb as being an overall tonic for well-being and endurance, as well as helping to maintain bone density, ligament and tendon strength and flexibility.
Eucommia is a superb Yang Jing tonic (also a Yin Jing tonic to a lesser degree). It is renowned for its ability to promote better endocrine system and sexual functions, to enhance normal growth, to promote healing and to strengthen the back, (especially the lower back), joints, knees and ankles and the entire physical structure of the body. It is favoured by athletes, martial artists, yoga and Qi Gong practitioners, menopausal women and those recovering from bone injury or tissue damage due to stress, age or trauma.
Eucommia is most famous for its Kidney tonifying effects and is considered an important herb for improving potency in men and fertility in women. It also helps slow down ejaculation.
Eucommia is known to be effective in reducing the symptoms of high blood pressure and easing tension. It is widely used clinically for hypertension. Many well-established animal and human clinical studies support this theory. There are many other studies that have shown that Eucommia potentiates the immunologic functions of the body by significantly enhancing phagocytic action which involves the clearing away of foreign material from the bloodstream by the white blood cells. Eucommia is very mild and has no known negative interactions with drugs or adverse side effects and is therefore safe to use with conventional Western drugs if desired.

Dandy Blend is a caffeine-free, gluten-free herbal coffee substitute. It tastes remarkably like a full-bodied cup of coffee without the acidity, bitterness or withdrawal symptoms. It's great for the liver and helps round out the bitterness flavour of the tonic herbs in this formula. Dandy Blend is made of the water-soluble extracts of five non-GMO ingredients; three roots and two grains (barley and rye), not from the ingredients themselves. The ingredients are roasted separately and then combined in prescribed proportions, placed into a vat, covered in hot water, and allowed to steep for a prescribed period of time. Zeolites is a natural aluminosilicate zeolite mineral, micronized into an ultrafine powder. It was created by the earth and formed many millions of years ago, from volcanic rock and ash meeting with water to form a unique micro porous alumni-silicate crystal with an open cage “honeycomb” structure with a strong negative charge.
The strong negative charge and “honeycomb” structure of the zeolites have the ability to electromagnetically trap and hold positively charged particles like heavy metals and other nasty toxins like DDT, dioxins, PCB’s, pesticides, herbicides, radioactive particles and some viral particles. Through a process known as cation exchange, zeolites can safely and gently remove these heavy metals and other contaminants through normal excretory processes, allowing the immune system to operate more efficiently.
Zeoliltes is a powerful detoxification tool. It has many functions and benefits for human health. It is high in trace minerals - magnesium, calcium, potassium, and zinc, it modulates the immune system, helps buffer the bodies pH to a more alkaline (7.2pH) state for optimal immune function, has a strong antioxidant capacity by trapping free radical molecules, and it’s great for your hair, skin, and nails.
Teelixir’s Zeolites are sourced in New Zealand. The characteristics of the New Zealand zeolite differ from the Australian source, having a higher CEC (Cation Exchange Capacity) and a better mineral profile. The Zeolites is a great potentiator, effectively increasing the bioavailability of the tonic herbs in this formula.
