The Legend of He Shou Wu.

The ancient legend of this herb tells of an old, frail and fast aging man named Mr. Ho. Lonely old Mr. Ho’s greatest desire was to start a family and have children with a beautiful woman. But his lack of passion and sex drive kept him from accomplishing his wish. He has been searching all over for substances that will help to restore his vitality and youth. One day Mr. Ho falls asleep by the roadside. When he awakes he notices a bright shining plant emanating light all around it. He believes this plant could be of some use to him so he picks it out of the ground and takes it with him. He passes the plant to his local shaman herbalist to work with. After some experimentation with different preparations, the herbalist discovers that by simmering it in a special blend of wine and black bean sauce, the herb was transformed into a powerful tonic for rejuvenation. Mr. Ho begins to consume the herb and quickly notices his youth and vitality returning. He is able to sleep better, have more sustained energy, his libido, and sexual vigor increased, his lower back pain was relieved, and his hair grew back and returned to its original black color. The legend claims that Mr. Ho ended up propagating seventy children and lived to be a hundred and thirty years old. The Chinese translation of He Shou Wu literally means "Old black haired Ho” or “Mr. Ho’s black hair”. Thusly, the herb He Shou Wu was named after its discoverer Mr. Ho.

Either way is fine. This is considered a superfood that can be taken on its own or combined with other foods.

Can I combine this with other mushrooms and herbs?

Yes, absolutely! In fact, we recommend it. Combining these tonic herbs together will actually enhance their efficacy, not reduce it. You will already find He Shou Wu in our Primal Essence tonic herb blend.

Is this raw or prepared He Shou Wu?

We only use Prepared He Shou Wu. Raw He Shou Wu is not a tonic. It is high in emodin compounds which have a strong laxative effect, thus, raw He Shou Wu is used in other conditions.

Prepared He Shou Wu refers to the traditional method of cooking the raw He Shou Wu roots in a black bean stew. This method makes the herb easier to digest and brings out more of tonifying qualities and anti-aging benefits. This is how Taoist herbalists and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners have consumed the herb for centuries.

How is this herb extracted?

Teelixir He Shou Wu is extracted using water only at a 10:1 potency. This means ten kilograms of He Shou Wu root is used to produce one kilogram of this He Shou Wu extract.

Where is this herb sourced?

Teelixir He Shou Wu organically (semi-wild) cultivated, with respect to, and abiding by the fundamental concept of "Di Tao” sourcing in Chinese herbalism. Di Tao means “Earth Tao” or in Chinese, “authentic source.” Teelixir He Shou Wu root comes directly from its original growing source, the pristine high mountain ranges of China, far from any cities or industrial pollution.

How old are your He Shou Wu roots when collected?

The roots are harvested when they are at least 4 years old. Traditionally, the best quality roots are 4 or more years old. It is said that the older the roots the more adaptogenic qualities the herb possesses.

What is "semi-wild” cultivation?

"Semi-wild" herbs are grown from seed in a protected natural environment (a mountain forest or desert, for example) where it is allowed to grow naturally, without human interference. The semi-wild cultivation process simulates the growing conditions of the wild mushroom where it can accumulate food and energy naturally.

When can I expect to see results?

Everyone is different depending on the level of health they are experiencing. In some cases, the benefits of our products may be felt instantaneous while others may experience subtle influences at first and notice cumulative effects developing over time. For great results, we recommend consuming one or more of our products regularly for at least 30-100 days.

Does He Shou Wu reverse grey hair and hair loss?

Prolonged use of this herb is said to turn one’s grey hair back to its original color. This is He Shou Wu’s most famous attribute and is widely used in China today for this reason. It is known to help the hair grow fuller and more illustrious. This aligns with the legend of He Shou Wu which involved a balding and grey-haired man who was able to restore his natural hair color after consuming He Shou Wu for some time. There was one study of men taking a He Shou Wu tincture which saw that 32 of the 36 subjects had positive results. However, this seems to be the only study.

The best answer is that this is likely to work for some people but not everyone. If this is your goal, we would recommend consuming He Shou Wu in higher doses for a longer period of time along with other dietary and lifestyle changes for best results.

Is there any side effects?

Prepared He Shou Wu is extremely gentle and safe to consume. However, it must be prepared correctly in order to possess its tonic properties. Raw, unprocessed He Shou Wu is a strong laxative and should not be consumed regularly. Raw He Shou Wu may be liver toxic in some individuals, contrary to prepared He Shou Wu which has shown to be liver protective.

Some individuals may experience soft stools and mild gastrointestinal disturbances. However, this is rare with moderate doses of prepared He Shou Wu. If you experience this, we would recommend lowering your dose.

How long will my Teelixir products last?

If kept sealed, all products will last at least two years from the date of purchase. In some cases, the herbal material can “candy” (harden) over a period of time, depending on the environmental conditions. This does not mean the product has gone bad, it is still just as effective and beneficial. Make sure the bag is sealed at all times when not in use to prevent moisture and oxygen from entering.

Are Teelixir products non-irradiated?

Yes, absolutely! No amount of irradiation is ever done on any Teelixir products. We've gone to extreme lengths to ensure that all of the tonic herbs, mushrooms, adaptogens, and superfoods we import under the Teelixir brand name have not been processed in any harmful ways that could damage the nutrition or chemical profile of the herbal material. We wouldn’t accept them any other way!

Contrary to what you may have heard, irradiation does not improve the bio-availability and effectiveness of these tonic superfoods. Irradiation is mostly used to prolong the shelf life of a food product and most often, creates a nutrient depleted and inferior food item at the expense of the consumer. That’s not how we do things at Teelixir. We share your zero tolerance for food irradiation.
